| Francis Peabody, Founder of Chatham |
In 1800, Francis Peabody landed at what is
now known as Waterford Green and soon began building a small community along this bank of the Miramichi River. With easy access
to the Miramichi River, and thus, the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Atlantic Ocean, Waterford Green was vital to the development
of this settlement. In 1896, this community would be named the Town of Chatham, and in 2008, Waterford Green would become
a gateway into Miramichi Landings.

Now, over 100 years later, Waterford Green is still a very important place within the City
of Miramichi. In recent years, Miramichi Landings has transformed Waterford Green into a prime location, attracting both residents
and tourists year round, with the creation of a playground, a stage, beautiful landscaping and interpretive panels.

Waterford Green is a multi-faceted park where people can relax, enjoy live entertainment,
or even take a trip back in time by discovering local history along its trails. To top it off, Waterford Green plays host
to large festivals such as Canada’s Irish Festival, occurring annually each July, and is a short distance from lodging,
dining, and shopping in Historic Water Street.
We encourage visitors to take a picture with the gentleman sitting
on a bench near the river. Fear not, for Mr. Peabody is a quiet, friendly lad who wishes the very best for his community.
