Tourism Helps The Local Economy in a Big Way!
Here are some statistics that you should find interesting:
1) In 2005 tourism spending in Canada
totaled $62.7 billion this represents a 7.2% increase compared to 2004.
2) Canadian residents accounted for $45.2 billion
– 72.1%, while foreigners spent $17.5 billion – 27.9%.
Although these statistics are a little dated I wanted to bring them to your attention none the less, in order to highlight
to you the impact tourism can have in our community. To bring these figures closer to home, according to a 2003 Enterprise
Miramichi Tourism Sector Task Group Report the Miramichi attracts approximately 150,000 individuals using conservative estimates.
Now applying data from the Canadian Tourism Commission, that on average Canadians spend $627.00 per trip, we obtain
a figure of $94,050,000 annually. Even if we were to capture half of this locally, since we have to consider their travel
costs to arrive here, this still represents a very significant benefit for the Miramichi year in and year out. This
is why I want to encourage you to invite your friends and family to visit you this season. There is and will be plenty
of things to see and do for them during their stay.
Tell them about all the exciting
line-up of events/festivals i.e.; The Rock ‘N’ Roll Festival, Canada’s Irish Festival, The Miramichi Folksong
Festival, The Miramichi Salmon Classic, The Miramichi Highland Games and Scottish Festival, The Miramichi Kitchen Party, etc.,
You can also mention the opening of two new tourist attractions: The Miramichi Eco-Centre and the
Metepenagiag Heritage Park which are world class venues, which should keep them busy for one day at a time. Don’t
forget to mention the Miramichi Dragway to those that like the drill of smoke and noise. On the water there will be numerous
things to do; Atlantic salmon fishing, historic/scenic boat tours, and of course tubing on a hot sunny day. There is even
the potential that Miramichi will be visited by several Tall Ships this summer, I will give you the details as soon
as they are finalized. These are just some examples, let your imagination go, or if you want some ideas, call us at 773-1800
or drop by to see us at 1733 Water Street, or visit us at www.MiramichiLandings.com.
Keep in mind that every extra day your friends or family members stay here
the more of the $627.00 they spend here. We will be offering a $50.00 dinner gift certificate to the family that will have
the highest number of out of town guests visit them by the end of August. The certificate will be valid at any local
dinning establishment. Please call or email us at morecom@nb.aibn.com to register. Once you have registered, your guests will have to come by the office to be added to your list. So start calling
or emailing and have a fun filled summer.
